Enhanced Remake of a Classic

AM2R is an adventure fangame created by DoctorM64. The adventure game is a remake of the Game Boy title “Metroid II: Return of Samus”. It features the eponymous Metroidvania genre where players explore an open-world environment with backtracking included.

The Impact of Metroid II

AM2R is a fan-made enhanced remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy. Metroid II was initially considered as the weakest in the franchise by some critics but it still garnered favorable reviews by reviewers and gamers. Some of the features noted were the non-linear replay value and thematic atmosphere. Players are free to explore any sections, at the same time required to return on previous areas after acquiring the necessary key items and power-ups. Every in-game item can help players find secret, areas as well as traverse inaccessible places. The world was designed in a singular large level, creating a claustrophobic experience with an eerie alien biomes thanks to the H.R. Giger inspired art style. The background music also added the moody feeling whenever players explore the world.

Vast Improvements

AM2R adds new features and graphical design to the Game Boy title. Players still control the space bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the Metroid's home planet SR388. It has new gameplay mechanics akin to Metroid: Zero Mission and Super Metroid. The enemy artificial intelligence is overhauled to fit in the modern gaming scene. There are also new mini-bosses included which are absent from the original Metroid II. Players have to confront evolving 55 Metroids, along with non-Metroid opponents. Players can also discover new areas exclusive to this fan game. Such changes lead to the inclusion of a better map system with logbook-esque entries. Players will also notice that the gameplay is more solid and less floaty. Some maneuvering skills like grabbing the ledge, automatic Morphball transformation when venturing in tunnels, climbing short ledges instinctively, dedicated command keys, and even an Ukemi ability or tactical falling when knocked out by enemies are integrated into this game. It also updated the graphics from the classic monochromatic color scheme of the Game Boy to the 16-bit style graphics found on Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game includes an original soundtrack where each track is remixed or remastered versions and new music that is not found on Metroid II.

PROS

  • New gameplay mechanics
  • Exclusive enemies and bosses
  • 16-bit graphics upgrade
  • Original soundtrack

CONS

  • An unofficial Nintendo game
  • Only a single world to explore
  • Backtracking prior sections takes time
  • Some boss battles are annoying
