AM2R is an adventure fangame created by DoctorM64. The adventure game is a remake of the Game Boy title “Metroid II: Return of Samus”. It features the eponymous Metroidvania genre where players explore an open-world environment with backtracking included.

AM2R is a fan-made enhanced remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy. Metroid II was initially considered as the weakest in the franchise by some critics but it still garnered favorable reviews by reviewers and gamers. Some of the features noted were the non-linear replay value and thematic atmosphere. Players will also notice that the gameplay is more solid and less floaty. Some maneuvering skills like grabbing the ledge, automatic Morphball transformation when venturing in tunnels, climbing short ledges instinctively, dedicated command keys, and even an Ukemi ability or tactical falling when knocked out by enemies are integrated into this game. It also updated the graphics from the classic monochromatic color scheme of the Game Boy to the 16-bit style graphics found on Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game includes an original soundtrack where each track is remixed or remastered versions and new music that is not found on Metroid II.
